What is VR?

What virtual reality is, and why it works so well for safety training.

Step 1 of 3: Understand VR

What is virtual reality (VR)?

Virtual reality (VR) is a computer-generated environment in which you can see and interact with a three-dimensional world as if you were really there. When you put on a VR headset, you find yourself in a different place: a factory floor, a construction site or a classroom. Unlike watching a video on a screen, you step inside the content and explore it naturally, looking around and using your hands.

VR combines graphics, motion tracking and sound to create a realistic sense of presence. Besides gaming and entertainment, it is now widely used in education, safety training and professional development. People can practice skills, react to real-life scenarios and build confidence without physical risk.

Why VR works for education and safety training

Traditional learning relies on theory, reading or videos. VR turns passive learning into active experience: when learners act in a realistic environment, they understand more and remember it better. A meta-analysis of 52 studies (Safety Science, 2024) shows that VR in safety training improves knowledge and retention.

How EHS VR uses it

We believe learning should be engaging, safe and effective. That is why we build VR training for companies, institutions and educators. In our VR modules, participants explore lifelike scenarios, learn by doing and repeat exercises as many times as they need, from safety drills to industrial procedures and school workshops.
