Carbon Monoxide VR game for children – the CO ghost in a bathroom with a gas water heater.

About the training

Carbon Monoxide VR Training is an interactive and educational simulation designed especially for children, teaching them about the dangers of this invisible, odorless gas. By making carbon monoxide visible in a fun and creative way, the app helps young players understand the risks and learn how to respond safely.

The scenario begins in a bathroom with a faulty ventilation system, where gas escapes from a water heater. Players must quickly evacuate the apartment and call emergency services (112). The challenge grows as carbon monoxide is joined by characters such as the Chimney Sweep and the gas heater, making it harder and harder to reach safety.

This VR game raises awareness of carbon monoxide hazards while encouraging quick reactions, safe behavior, and life-saving awareness in a child-friendly environment.

Training Program

Training Objective

The goal of this training is to educate children about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) and teach them how to react correctly in hazardous situations. Participants will learn what CO is, where it can form, the symptoms of poisoning, and how to protect themselves. With virtual reality, children will experience realistic scenarios and make critical decisions, such as recognizing a CO detector alarm, evacuating, and calling emergency services. Additionally, the VR application includes an interactive movement-based game, where participants actively fight against CO, visualized as an animated ghost with arms and legs that “attacks” virtual players. In different challenges, children must dodge the incoming CO cloud and fight it off by waving their hands and striking. The game requires physical activity, engaging participants in an immersive and dynamic learning experience.

Who Should Attend?

This training is designed for children aged 7 to 12. The program is structured as an engaging educational game that adapts the difficulty level to the child’s age. Thanks to the interactive approach, children can practically learn how to react in an emergency, while having fun and improving their coordination skills. It is also suitable for:

  • Participants of workplace safety integration events
  • Youth firefighting teams
  • Fire departments as part of public safety education programs

Training Outline

Part I: Introduction to VR (2 minutes)

  • Learning how to use the VR training application, including movement and interaction within the virtual environment
  • Familiarization with hand tracking for natural, controller-free interaction

Part II: “CO Attack” Game (7 minutes)

The child starts the game in a virtual bathroom with a faulty ventilation system. A CO cloud forms, visualized as an animated ghost with arms and legs, gradually filling the room. A CO detector appears, emitting a warning signal.

The child’s tasks:

  • Recognize the CO detector alarm
  • Evacuate the home as quickly as possible
  • Open windows if it is safe to do so
  • Call emergency services at 112

Interactive challenges:

  • Dodging the approaching CO cloud by actively moving in VR
  • Fighting the CO ghost by waving hands and striking, causing it to disperse
  • Final showdown with “Mr. Fireplace”, the final boss, which takes a special strategy to defeat

The game’s difficulty increases over time: longer exposure to CO slows reaction time and reduces visibility.

Training Benefits

This training is dynamic, engaging, and adapted to children’s perception. VR allows participants to safely experience realistic emergency situations and learn life-saving reactions while actively taking part in an interactive battle against a virtual hazard.
